The History of Horse Racing

The first horses first to have arrived in Australia came from Africa on board the Lady Penrhyn. The fleet brought one stallion, three mares, one colt and two fillies. Afterward, horses of different breeds from around the world were brought to Australia.

The first official horse race event was held at Hyde Park in Sydney in October 1810 by the officers of the 73rd regiment of Governor Macquarie. After that the Australian Jockey Club was founded and they held their meetings and events at Homebush from 1842 until 1859. A year later they moved it to Randwick. The AJC is an integral part of horse-racing tradition since it is responsible for regulating the sport after it moved to Randwick.

In 1838, Victoria held its first official race event out on Batman's Hill in Melbourne.

The first recorded race event was held at Queensland's Cooper's Plains in 1843. Twenty years later the Queensland Turf Club was founded and in 1923 the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club was also founded.

In 1943, the Sydney Turf Club was founded and it held horse-racing events at Canterbury and the Rosehill Gardens track. The Sydney Turf Club is known for holding the richest race in the world for two-year old horses, which is the Golden Slipper Stakes.

Other horse racing clubs opened up afterward showing proof that Australia held horse racing with such high regard. Presently, Australia has over 360 registered racecourses and there are about 3,050 race events happening annually.
